Our aim is to create a safe, supportive and active learning environment. We strive to ensure that pupils, regardless of ability, are challenged to take risks in their thinking and perform to their full potential. We are proud of our inspiring learning environment, housed in a state-of- the art building. Science is taught by highly qualified specialists and supported by a wonderful group of technicians and teaching assistants.

At Key Stage 3, we have undertaken a programme of redevelopment of the curriculum in order to ensure that teaching helps to develop crucial independent  inquiry skills that will benefit pupils on whatever academic or vocational path they follow in the future.  Science is assessed through tests and extended milestone assessments. These include creative model-making, practical investigations and extended discursive writing on controversial topics such as IVF and genetic engineering.

At Key Stage 4, the science department is highly successful, pupil performance in 2011 and 2012 placed the school  firmly in the top 10% of science departments nationally. We offer a full range of Level 1 and 2 courses, including BTEC Applied Science, double and triple award GCSE Science (OCR 21st Century Science). Science organises three weekly clubs: Junior STEM, Senior STEM and GCSE Astronomy -  in addition to a daily informal lunchtime drop-in sessions, where pupils may seek help or make use of laptops and books for research.
