Modern Foreign Languages

At Sawston Village College we believe in languages for all. By learning a Modern Foreign Language, pupils acquire transferable skills to support lifelong use for travel, work and leisure. The vast majority of our pupils study either French or Spanish in Year 7. In Years 8 and 9, more able pupils also study German, as their second language.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum prepares pupils for GCSE and it is strongly encouraged and recommended that all pupils study a Language at GCSE.

The Faculty offers a range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities. At Key Stage 3, these include visits to Normandy in Year 7 and to the Rhineland and Barcelona in Year 8. For GCSE German pupils, there is a well established German exchange scheme.

All pupils also have the opportunity to learn Italian in after-school lessons at beginner, intermediate and advanced level.
