English at Sawston Village College is taught by a vibrant and enthusiastic team of specialist teachers. It is the primary aim of the department to provide pupils with strong literacy skills but, furthermore, to equip them with the skills to utilise and manipulate language for a variety of purposes. In addition, there is a strong focus on promoting reading for enjoyment, but also to develop an analytical understanding of literary texts.

The key stage 3 curriculum covers a wide variety of ‘milestone’ tasks to develop pupils’ skills in Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening, which is designed to feed into the essential requirements for GCSE English Language and Literature. Schemes of work cover fiction, autobiographical and argument writing; for reading, pupils are expected to examine a range of fiction, non-fiction and media texts; all pupils engage in oral tasks involving presentations and working in groups. Milestone tasks have been differentiated to enable learners of all abilities to access the curriculum and challenge them, as well as fostering a more independent approach to learning.

The English Faculty offers a host of extra-curricular opportunities regularly, extending from poetry and writing competitions to theatre trips. Additionally, we have a highly successful track-record in the Youth Speaks debating competition.

Revision materials can be found on the pupil drive.
