Anglian Learning and Governance

From the 1 September 2016, Sawston Village College has formed Anglian Learning, a multi academy trust, together with Bottisham Village College, Bassingbourn Village College and Netherhall School and Sixth Form.  Further details of the Anglian Learning trust, including information relating to the Trust Board, financial control and the objectives of the group can be found here

In addition to the Trust Board, the College’s work is also overseen by the Local Governing Body.  This group, which is comprised of a wide range of expertise and stakeholder representation, acts within the framework established by the Anglian Learning trust board and within the terms of the scheme of delegation which can be found here

Mr C Sausman

Colin Sausman has been a Parent Governor at Sawston Village College since May 2017. He is an economist by training, and has held Director-level positions in the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), and the Australian Energy Market Commission. Since 2013 he has run his own economic consulting firm, specialising in energy markets and regulation. He has two daughters who are former pupils at Sawston Village College, and a son in Year 10. Colin is a product of (and a strong advocate for) state schools, and he has degrees in Economics from St John’s College, Cambridge and the University of Essex. He is also a FA-qualified football coach, and a team manager at Harston Youth Football Club.

Mr H Thomas

Huw Thomas has been a parent governor since 2018, and has a child in Year 10.  He is an Army Chief of Staff and specialises in Welfare, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and investigation of Bullying and Harassment. Prior to his transfer to the Army he was a Metropolitan Police Officer for fifteen years.  He read Chemistry and Biochemistry at London University, and was a pupil at Repton School in Derbyshire.

Mr J Russell

Mr Russell began his teaching career in Suffolk in 1996, following teacher training at the University of Nottingham.  Prior to this, he studied at universities in Stirling, Kansas (USA) and London, achieving his Masters in 1994.  He joined Sawston Village College as Assistant Headteacher in 2005, having previously been Head of Communications and Media at Sharnbook Upper in Bedfordshire and then Head of English at Impington Village College and Sixth Form Centre in Cambridgeshire for four years.  Promoted to Deputy Headteacher in 2010 and seconded to Bottisham Village College as Acting Principal in 2016, he became Principal of the school in 2018.

Mr B Ashurst

Mr Barrie Ashurst has been a Governor at Sawston Village College since 1988. He is a Chartered Engineer and had a 30 year career at Ciba Geigy/Hexcel as Engineering/Production Manager with multi million pound budgets and large teams in excess of 300 people. On retiring in 2001 he worked within the family retail business which had a turnover exceeding £15m per annum and staff numbers in excess of 500, the business was sold in 2016. Barrie now acts in a consultancy role to the Property Company set-up after the sale of the business.  He is also a member of Great Shelford Parish Council.

Dr S Fitzgerald

Shaun Fitzgerald is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Sustainable Buildings at Cambridge University. In addition to academic teaching and research, he has supported government on various committees regarding low energy buildings. He has been part of the SAGE Environmental Modelling Group during the Coronavirus crisis.
He has four children, all of whom have been or are at Sawston Village College.

Mrs S Franklin

Having had two daughters who attended Sawston Village College, Sarah Franklin was a parent governor between 2014 and 2018 and has been a Trust-appointed Governor since June 2018.  Sarah works in the financial services industry.  

Dr Rachel Kerr

Rachel Kerr was appointed as a Trust Governor in May 2020 and has two daughters attending Sawston Village College.  Dr Kerr is a Reader in International Relations and Contemporary War in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, where she is also Director for Students and Culture. Her research is in the area of post-conflict/transitional justice and memory, art and reconciliation, and war crimes.  She has many years’ experience as a university teacher, research supervisor, mentor and personal tutor.  She grew up in Cambridge and attended Impington Village College and Hills Road Sixth Form College.

Mrs P Stanton (Chair of Governors)

Mrs Stanton is a Governor at Sawston Village College and Gt & Lt Shelford VA Primary School.  Retired but has experience of: teaching (KS3-KS5 Maths), administration (including finance), school governance (primary and secondary), LA Advisory Governor scheme, Diocesan Board of Education, LA CYP Committee, LA Admissions Forum, church and community organisations.

Mr D Stratford

Mr D Stratford a governor at Sawston Village College since 2017. Daniel is a former teacher and trained accountant and currently works in the Property Management Industry.
