Modern Foreign Languages

At Sawston Village College we believe in languages for all. By learning a Modern Foreign Language, pupils acquire transferable skills to support lifelong use for travel, work and leisure. The vast majority of our pupils study French in Year 7. In Years 8 and 9, more able pupils also study either German or Spanish, as their second language.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum prepares pupils for GCSE and it is strongly encouraged and recommended that all pupils study a Language at GCSE apart from those with significant literacy difficulties. Pupils can then choose to develop their studies at AS and A Level at Hills Road or Long Road Sixth Form Colleges.

The Faculty offers a range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities. At Key Stage 3, these include the Year 7 Normandy and Year 8 Rhineland trips and the Madrid Spanish Exchange. For GCSE German pupils, there is a visit to our German partner school and Cologne.

All pupils also have the opportunity to learn Italian in after-school lessons at beginner, intermediate and advanced level.

The Faculty is comprised of five specialist language teachers and two Foreign Language Assistants. In addition to specialist language classrooms, there is also a Languages Multimedia Suite, which allows for independent, interactive language learning.
