Learn to Learn

Learn to Learn

Learn to Learn is a bespoke course, written by our own staff, that equips pupils with transferable skills to improve their learning in all other subjects, in their wider activities and future careers. The course is designed to make explicit how we learn, why we learn and the many different approaches to learning.  It gives pupils opportunities to reflect upon their own learning and to practise the behaviours, attitudes and skills that will make them successful at Sawston Village College and beyond.  The ASPIRE ethos permeates the course, with a particular emphasis on helping pupils to learn how to be become self-motivated, successful independent learners.

Taught once a fortnight in Year 7, pupils are actively involved in thinking about their own approach to learning. Pupils are shown how to work in teams by adopting specific roles and are required to appreciate that people have different strengths that need to be nurtured through collaboration, encouragement and support. Emotional intelligence is explored with a view to helping pupils to become more empathetic, resilient, perseverant and motivated. We also look at the ways we can manage information through revision and research techniques, as well as how to organise information through summarising and note-taking skills. Communication and thinking skills are developed throughout the year-long course. Above all, the strength of the course is in how pupils go on to apply Learn to Learn skills and ideas elsewhere, to develop the most effective habits of working and thinking.
