Welcome from the Principal

Welcome from the Principal

Welcome to the website of Sawston Village College, a 1000 pupil 11-16 mixed comprehensive academy in South Cambridgeshire.  The College was established in 1930, the first of the village colleges that were the inspiration of educational pioneer Henry Morris, who believed in the power of schools to transform their local communities by providing learning from cradle to grave - to motivate and engage learners of all ages and all abilities.

The vision of Morris is still at the heart of our work today.  The underpinning ethos of the College is based on unlocking the potential of all learners; creating opportunities both curricular and extracurricular and achieving excellence in all aspects of our work.   We are committed to ensuring that our pupils leave the College able to play positive roles in their own communities as active and responsible citizens.  This means a focus on high standards of behaviour, outstanding approaches to teaching and learning, mutual respect and care for others, and a firm commitment to work in partnership with our community.

We are proud of the distinctive education that we offer at Sawston Village College, including our truly exceptional musical provision; high performing Maths, Science, English and teams; and our broad and balanced curriculum.  There are also rich opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles, from Year 7 through into Year 11, influencing the direction of the school and supporting their peers.  The College, too, has an amazing reputation for film making, with pupils’ films winning national and international awards, and contributing to the award of the highly prestigious Artsmark Platinum and all alongside a vibrant PE and sports provision.

We also believe in the importance of supporting our local community, through adult learning programmes, a fully equipped and modern sports centre, our pupil led and organised Sawston Cinema group, partnerships with local arts organisations and much more.  A school should be at the heart of its local community - and the local community at the heart of the school.

Sawston Village College is a happy school, a very vibrant and positive place to learn and to work - recognised by Ofsted in 2013 in their judgement of the school as high performing with outstanding pupil behaviour and safety.  We firmly believe that all young people can thrive in a school community where they are known, liked, valued and feel safe - and we will do everything to ensure this is the case.  It is not surprising therefore that our examination results place us amongst the very best schools not only in Cambridgeshire but also nationally.

I hope this website will give you an insight into these aims and values but if you would like to know more about our work, please do not hesitate to contact the College to arrange a tour with me or one of my senior colleagues.  We would be proud to show you around our school.
