Anglian Learning and Governance

From the 1 September 2016, Sawston Village College has formed Anglian Learning, a multi academy trust, together with Bottisham Village College, Bassingbourn Village College and Netherhall School and Sixth Form.  Further details of the Anglian Learning trust, including information relating to the Trust Board, financial control and the objectives of the group can be found here

In addition to the Trust Board, the College’s work is also overseen by the Local Governing Body.  This group, which is comprised of a wide range of expertise and stakeholder representation, acts within the framework established by the Anglian Learning trust board and within the terms of the scheme of delegation which can be found here

Dr N Morant

Professional background: University Lecturer in Psychology / Mental Health.  Academic and NHS-based research on mental health, including development and evaluation of treatments and services for children, young people and adults. 

Mr C Sausman

Colin Sausman has been a Parent Governor at Sawston Village College since May 2017. He is an economist by training, and has held Director-level positions in the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), and the Australian Energy Market Commission. Since 2013 he has run his own economic consulting firm, specialising in energy markets and regulation. He has two daughters who are current pupils at Sawston Village College, and his son starts at the College in September 2017. Colin is a product of (and a strong advocate for) state schools, and he has degrees in Economics from St John’s College, Cambridge and the University of Essex. He is also a FA-qualified football coach, and a team manager at Shelford and Stapleford Strikers Football Club.

Mrs K Sage

Kerry Sage began her teaching career in Stoke-On-Trent in 2004, having graduated from the University of Manchester where she studied Geography and Archaeology, and following teacher training at Manchester Metropolitan University in Secondary Geography. In 2011, Kerry moved to Cambridge and took up the position of Head of Geography at Sawston Village College and Pupil Premium Coordinator in 2016. Under Kerry's leadership the Geography Department have been awarded the Geographical Association's Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) for the second time in 2017. Kerry is also a Specialist Leader of Education for Geography in the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk Schools Alliance (CASSA). In 2017 Kerry trained as an Iceland Teacher Tour Leader with Discover the World.

Mrs T Page

Tamsin began her career in education as a Pastoral Leader in a secondary modern in south Lincolnshire. After taking her PGCE through the North Bedfordhsire SCITT programme, her induction year was completed at a very large 11-18 secondary school in Huntingdon. Tamsin progressed to Resources Centre Manager and whole-school literacy co-ordinator whilst focusing on KS5, teaching five different A-levels. In 2015 Tamsin began working at Sawston VC as Lead Practitioner for English, taking responsibility for the ITT programme the following year. Tamsin is an SLE and is currently seconded to SLT.

Principal

Mr J Russell

Mr Russell began his teaching career in Suffolk in 1996, following teacher training at the University of Nottingham.  Prior to this, he studied at universities in Stirling, Kansas (USA) and London, achieving his Masters in 1994.  He joined Sawston Village College as Assistant Headteacher in 2005, having previously been Head of Communications and Media at Sharnbook Upper in Bedfordshire and then Head of English at Impington Village College and Sixth Form Centre in Cambridgeshire for four years.  Promoted to Deputy Headteacher in 2010 and seconded to Bottisham Village College as Acting Principal in 2016, he became Principal of the school in 2018.

Mr B Ashurst

Mr Ashurst had a 30 year career at Ciba Geigy / Hexcel: Engineering / Production Manager with multi million pound budgets, large teams in excess of 300 people.  Last 15 years in family "Domino's Pizza" franchise business, t/o in excess of £15m per annum and staff numbers in excess of 500, business sold in Jan 2016.  Now acting in a consultancy role to Property Company set-up after sale of business and managing £1M conversion of an office building to residential, company owns a number of commercial properties and is now consulting on leases.  Mr Ashurst is also a member of Great Shelford Parish Council.

Mr R Bethell

Mr Bethell has been a governor of a secondary school since 2003 and is pleased to have been appointed to the Local Governing Body of Sawston Village College after moving to the local area. Now retired, he began working life as a qualified teacher of mathematics before making a career change to spend thirty years working in the aerospace industry as an engineer and project manager.

Dr S Fitzgerald

Dr Fitzgerald is the CEO of Venture Capital backed Breathing Buildings.  Academic engineering research and teaching at Cambridge University.

Mrs S Franklin

Mrs Franklin was previously a Parent Governor. Secretary of Great Shelford Tennis Club since 2014. Coordinator of the junior learn to row programme at City of Cambridge Rowing Club since 2015. Having had 30 years experience working in the financial sector, Mrs Franklin is now a financial services consultant, currently working for a small broker in London where her role is predominantly to be responsible for the onboarding of clients into the foreign exhange trading operation. Mrs Franklin has two daughters, one of whom has completed her 5 years at Sawston Village College and is on her way to sixth form college, and the other is in year 11 at Sawston Village College.

Mrs H Hurrell

Holly is a former Sawston Village College pupil who went on to graduate from Salford University (Manchester). After qualifying as a Quantity Surveyor she worked for Kier on the Canal & River Trust Contract and Anglian Water AMP6 Alliance. Now back in Cambridge she is currently working as a Senior QS with Skanska UK. Her step-daughter has also recently joined the College after a move to Shelford. As a past pupil of SVC Holly was keen to become a governor to promote and support the development of students in an ever changing curriculum and environment.

Mrs P Stanton (Chair of Governors)

Mrs Stanton is a Governor at Sawston Village College and Gt & Lt Shelford VA Primary School.  Retired but has experience of: teaching (KS3-KS5 Maths), administration (including finance), school governance (primary and secondary), LA Advisory Governor scheme, Diocesan Board of Education, LA CYP Committee, LA Admissions Forum, church and community organisations.
