Dr Rob Wallach was our guest speaker. We felt it was appropriate to have a guest speaker to represent the University of Cambridge in its 800th anniversary year. I think we too often take it for granted that we live in such close proximity to one of the world’s greatest centres of learning; we should take every opportunity we can to inspire our young people to aspire to study there. Dr Wallach did just that by engaging his audience intellectually and by projecting warmth, humanity and great good humour. His brief biography follows.
Dr Rob Wallach is a University Senior Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy where he is an experienced lecturer, and undergraduate and postgraduate supervisor. Rob’s research is centred on the joining of materials, both understanding the basic science and also in optimising approaches for new materials; potential applications include aircraft engine turbine blades, car bodies, and electronic components.
Rob also is a Fellow at King’s College where he was a tutor for fifteen years and, most recently, Senior Tutor for six years; the latter role carries responsibility for the academic activities and welfare of all students in a College. Building on this experience, Rob now is actively involved in a number of major University and College committees, primarily those focusing on education and welfare issues for current and potential students. These include his currently being Secretary of the Senior Tutors' Committee, overseeing the University’s undergraduate exchange programme with MIT, and running various outreach activities for prospective students, school teachers and also primary school children
